The holy scriptures describe him as a kind of hermit, dressed in dromedary skin, leather belt, feeding on wild honey and locusts. Considered a holy man in his day by the Jews, and later a prophet by Christians and Muslims alike, "John the Baptist" was beheaded at Machaerus for political reasons on the orders of King Herod Antipas. Over and above the sacred texts, Flavius Josephus, the Jewish Roman historian, gives a fairly accurate account of the story of John the Baptist.
