Use the Fantasy plants from Total Plants, you can create many kinds of environment such as Cartoon, Fairy Tale, Horror, etc. We will take Horror as an example.
 

A.

 Types of Tree

We use the types of trees below and many more (Fallen Burnt, Big Thorn, Ivy Spy_Winter, Ivy Spy_Fall, Space_Pod, Ugly Tree, Extra_Terrestrial, Ugly Tree_Cluster…).

 Lights and Shadow
In this case, we apply the setting as below:
 
   
  Hint1: Use Self-Cast Shadow so that the plants are covered by the shadow.
Hint2: Since the environment is darker, set a higher value for Blur so the edge of the shadow appears blurry.
Hint3: Lower the Ambient Light to lower the entire light source.
Hint4: The Cast Shadow and Receive Shadow of the plants must not be turned off.

 Fog

Add Fog Particle Effect
 

Lower the color of the Fog, to create a gloomy night. Enlarge the size so it covers the entire scene.
