From the online manual: Preferences > System Section > Texture Launch Settings

After choosing which external editor you want to use, you specify "PNG with Alpha" or "PNG".

According to the documentation, the alpha option should open a single, composite editor window, while the plain option should open a split editor window.

In actual fact, the results are reversed. I have repeated swapping this setting several times and the results are consistent.
