It's my understanding 3DXchange will open a .3ds scene file and allow you to export Alembic or .abc format for import to UE4. My 3ds file contains a PathDeform WSM (World Space Modifier) which doesn't export other than via Alembic, and UE4 can only take such animations via Alembic. No? If so on both points, I'm hitting various walls in 3DXchange; 1. opening .3ds returns message, "The 3D model is too small. 3DXchange will resize and align again. The dummy figure functionality turns on for size reference." I then see nodes representing my meshes, but see now meshes in the viewport. 2. I don't see an option for exporting .abc, only .fbx, .bhv, .obj and native iclone. I tried the fbx option, see their was a sub option for Unreal, tried various settings, but UE4 wouldn't take the import. Thanks for advising. I'm on a trial version and need to verify functionality, am simply needing to export an .abc of animation from 3ds while preserving scale and alignment settings. Thanks.
Thank you for your feedback.
"3DXchange will open a .3ds scene file" is correct, however, "allow you to export Alembic or .abc format for import to UE4" is a function of iClone (requires 3DXchange Pipeline installed). So you will need to load your character/prop/motion into 3DXchange Pipeline, save them as icontent or directly apply them to iClone, edit the project in iClone, and export as .abc file.
