I really believe that multiple GPU support should be implemented with PBR Rendering. Game engines support this feature which allows for a lot of extra "Juice" when it comes to rendering scenes. I think it would be a great feature to add, particularly when it comes to rendering resource heavy scenes and would make it possible for you to scale up your machine as your needs increase without breaking the bank. It doesn't make sense that you would cut off users from a feature that can only improve the quality and speed of the final output.
It is good to point out though that currently multiple GPUs do NOT give you additional VRAM and also don't necessarily double performance. This to avoid user disappointment.
There is a fairly good overview here: https://www.pcauthority.com.au/Feature/441170,the-sli-question-is-multi-gpu-worth-it.aspx .
There is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of DirectX 12, which allows splitting the data and thus double the VRAM.
